Rockaway /Jamaica Bayside Visioning

A collection of concepts that foster a stronger connection between Rockaways residents and the Jamaica Bay shoreline to develop effective measures against climate change

The Rockaway Peninsula in southeastern Queens, has one of our greatest natural resources, Jamaica Bay, along the baysize, yet most of it is inaccessible to the community, has aging infrastructure and is vulnerable to flooding.

This collection of ideas were developed by students from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design/Landscape Architecture studio, who collected input from local stakeholders through a series of community engagement sessions with a focus on developing the Bayside using effective measures to protect against climate change, develop accessible public space and foster new ideas around housing and commercial development.

These concepts that took a closer look at the stretch of land from the Nassau County line, to Beach 108th St. We are publishing these concepts to inspire future planning efforts by government agencies to prioritize local knowledge and community needs in their plans.

We hope these presentations will inspire new initiatives to develop the bayside shoreline of the Rockaway Peninsula.
